What are Fungal Nail Infections?
Fungal nail in medical jargon is called Superficial White Onychomycosis (SWO) or Tinea unguium or Dermatophytosis unguium. As the name suggests, it is a condition in which the nail is infected by fungus .
They affect the toenails more often than the fingernails. Fungal nail infections are most common in older people. The fungus survives by feeding on the keratin with which the nail is made of.
Fungi are omni present, Fungal Infections usually develop when something makes the nails particularly vulnerable and the fungus more able to grow - when your feet or hands are constantly warm and moist. Nails infected by fungi can look very odd. They normally change color, becoming opaque white, yellow, green - or black. the nail may be thickened or crumble with time.
The clues to deep invasion of the nail plate are: inability to clear the discolouration by scraping the nail. clinical involvement of the nail in the nailfold adjacent area. Microscopic & structural analysis confirm deep penetration beyond the superficial layers of the nail plate.
There are three variants of fungal nail: classical SWO type dual invasion type, with involvement of nail plate-superficial as well as below. pseudo SWO with deep fungal infections of nail plate.

Causes are mainly hereditary, sweaty feet, wearing trainers all the time, sports people.
Treatments
Treatment with anti fungal agents like itraconazole,amolozine,fluconazole , treatments with lasers have yielded excellent results.
Treatment often needs to be taken for at least 3 to 6 months. Most infections can be cured, so long as you are serious in sticking to the treatment plan.
